On a long bus journey, an old man realises he has forgotten his flask of tea behind. Luckily his granddaughter has five cans of lemonade while his granson has three. During the journey they share them equally between the three and afterwards as a reward for their generosity , the old man gives them eight 10p coins, telling them to share them in proportion to the contribution of lemonade. They argue long and hard over how to divide the money. How should it be done ?

Girl should be given seven 10p coin and Boy should be given one 10p coin.

Reasoning:
They all had 8/3, 8/3, 8/3 amt. of drink.
Hence girls's contribution was 5-8/3
and boy's was 3-8/3
hence the contribution ratio (girl/boy) = (5-8/3)/(3-8/3) which is equal to 7/1
hence money should be 70/10

That's correct. It doesn't seem right though at first glance, does it ?

I don't think the little grandson will want to play this game again.
After all he did come with 3 cans which is 1 can less than half the
total.

Let's see if the sum can be made fairer.
We can exclude the old man from the equation as he contributed nothing
but only consumed.
If half the total cans is 4 cans :
The girl gave 5-4 cans = 1 can more than half.
The boy gave 3-4 cans = -1 can (less than half)
40 p is half . The girl should get 50p and the boy should get 30p.
To me that's logically fairer.
But if it were a fest and nobody knew anyone else, I guess the consumption factor would have to be included.
Oh I don't know. It just doesn't seem fair!

Correct, looks that girl deserves more that what the calculation says.

Huh ?
No, it was the granddaughter who brought 5 cans.
The boy deserved more. Your calculation has the boy/girl ratio the wrong way round.
