Parameter passing ( newbie JSP'er)

I am converting a PHP program to JSP, and it uses this type of code to pass variables.
<a href="orderdisp.php?order=O284282">
Can I use the same format, and how do I read a variable passed in this manner? Needless to say I have tried:
request.getParameter("order")
and it does not appear to work.

request.getParameter("order") should have worked.
