If the concept of communication between a client and a web server can be done by HTTP protocol, what happens if sockets are used or what is the role played by them.what is the difference between socket and secure socket layer used for
communication.
Is there any links or resources where can I get it cleared.
I really appreciate your help.
Thanks.

This is a very good explanation of socket programming, with examples of HTTP and other protocols (it is based on Java 1.1, but the concepts are the same):

HTTP is itself done via sockets, as it HTTPS/SSL. What makes it magic is that everyone has agreed on the protocols and port IDs to be used.
It's perfectly legal to use other socket ports and protocols as well, but I don't recommend it be done casually, since if you're planning to provide a generally-accessible service, you'll find that a lot of people are locked behind firewalls that only allow the http and maybe ftp ports to be accessed.
