I installed tomcat 4.0 today and i cannot start it,i set the java_home to c:\jdk1.2.2 in the startup exe file and i stiill when i double click that file i see just dos window for a second and it opens and closed very quick.
please anyhelp about what do i need to do?
i'm sure it is related to setting something in those files(startup.exe and shutdown.exe).
thanks for your help.

i experienced the same thing when i tried to use tomcat (version 3.1) long ago.
in my case it was because the classpath was not getting set since it was running out of environment space.
by increasing the memory in 'initial environment' in the properties tab of the dos prompt, and then running the bat file, i was able to start tomcat.
may be there is something equivalent in tomcat4.0.
try opening a dos prompt and increasing the memory and then running the exe file instead of doubleclicking.
hope this helps.

Hey Guys:
I have seen most of the time tomcat instalation response as
"Are you sure you have set right class path?" DUGH! Very few what and how responses.
My best bet is go through tomcat documentation. Install it, does not work uninstall it. Drink water reinstall it. Reread
BUILDING, README, RUNNING, and ../webapps/tomcat-docs. I tried it couple of times. I think in tomcat4.0 you got to set CATALINA_HOME = tomcat4.0. You know what! tomcat4.0 worked wonderful while I used it for servlet learning. It did not work for JSP. Even I could not run their samples programs except NUM guess. May be I am missing something. I do not know. I gave up and installed tomcat3.2 for JSP learning. It is working great. I know how painful it is. You will figure it out once you go through all docs. BK
