I'm finding a free app server or servlet engine to run jsp and servlet on linux server. My current web site got hit rate about 1,000/day but it uses ASP, so I'm gonna change it to jsp and servlet and run on linux instead of NT. Does anybody suggest me? Apache + Tomcat is the good choice or not? I also heard about Enhydra and Orion but I don't know much about them....

1000 hits a day is fine. On average that is only one hit every 90 seconds or so - very easily handled. Orion is very good. We are using it - not free though. Free for development use, but you need to pay for a license ($US1500 per server last I looked) if you are going to deploy it live.
I've tested Tomcat with WebBench, a request-generating tool. It served well up to about 15 requests per second, so you should have absolutely no problem with your site.
dirk , would you please tell what version of tomcat (3.1 or 3.2 you tested) you tested ? , what is the best version(3.x or 4.) of tomcat servers and what is the limitation of tomcat to hadle concurrent requests? thanks
I have tested Tomcat 3.2 and 4.0 exstensivly also. Tomcat 3.2 could not handle a load of more then 30 hits per minute. And that would return from a very simple jsp in 6 seconds. Tomcat 4.0 served the same page in 0.2 with 30 hits per minute. I have not found a cap for 4.0 yet but it is significantly higher then 3.2.
