Can Tomcat serve about 1,000 hits/day?

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
I'm finding a free app server or servlet engine to run jsp and servlet on linux server. My current web site got hit rate about 1,000/day but it uses ASP, so I'm gonna change it to jsp and servlet and run on linux instead of NT.
Does anybody suggest me?
Apache + Tomcat is the good choice or not?
I also heard about Enhydra and Orion but I don't know much about them....

Tomcat would have no problem at that hit rate, you could even use it by itself, without Apache just to make things easier.

1000 hits a day is fine.
On average that is only one hit every 90 seconds or so - very easily handled.
Orion is very good. We are using it - not free though. Free for development use, but you need to pay for a license ($US1500 per server last I looked) if you are going to deploy it live.

I've tested Tomcat with WebBench, a request-generating tool. It served well up to about 15 requests per second, so you should have absolutely no problem with your site.

Dirk,
Where did you get WebBench from ?
Thanks

dirk , would you please tell what version of tomcat (3.1 or 3.2 you tested) you tested ? , what is the best version(3.x or 4.) of tomcat servers and what is the limitation of tomcat to hadle concurrent requests?
thanks

I have tested Tomcat 3.2 and 4.0 exstensivly also. Tomcat 3.2 could not handle a load of more then 30 hits per minute. And that would return from a very simple jsp in 6 seconds. Tomcat 4.0 served the same page in 0.2 with 30 hits per minute. I have not found a cap for 4.0 yet but it is significantly higher then 3.2.

sorry but what do you mean by "served the same page in 0.2"?
Also, surely Tomcat's performance is dependent on the hardware you are running it on?

0.2 seconds, and one could assume he tested it on the same hardware.

But given that hardware is equal, Tomcat 4.x was re-written from the ground up, and one of it's design goals was "increased performance".

So unless they messed it up completely (which is not likely), Tomcat 4.x would be faster on any hardware, than 3.x on that same hardware.
