Hi TinTin,
Every once and a while (not sure there's a set time frame) a call goes out for new moderators and the bartenders and Sheriffs nominate individuals who have been regular and generally helpful participants in various forums. The nominee's votes are tallied by Price Waterhouse (just kidding) and they are then invited to become a bartender on a purely voluntary basis.

Indeed it does just about cover it.
But also need to add.
Plan future modifications to the site.
Vote for Current Ranch Hands to be promoted to Bartender.
Fight over who gets to moderate what forum.

Just as a minor point, it is vital for any prospective Bartender candidate to use and be generally known by his/her Real Name here at the Ranch. I can't help thinking that Tintin Herge is not, actually, your real name

Wondering aloud: When was the last time the great Maha Anna graced Meaningless Drivel with her presence? (Or has she been hanging out here using a pseudonym, like Eager Beaver or something like that )

I always thought Maha Anna was a guy. Dont know why but I did. And about my name, Just another thought. Why do u want to know the actual name . I think it as an intrusion in my privacy. Just my 2 pence. And if its a must, i can just log in thru some name like Jim Matthews or Robert Smith. But how does it matter??

So when I come to work for your company, or meet you at a convention, then I have some CLUE who you are .
Of course this is Meaningless Drivel, so you can be whoever you want here!

> I always thought Maha Anna was a guy. Dont know why but I did.
Could it be because her name translates as "big brother" in Hindi? This confused a number of people when she first showed up. But it's actually short for Mahalakshmi Annadurai. You can learn more about our staff here.
Actually most of your questions are addressed in our name policy page here. Basically we just don't want the main part of the site (outside Meaningless Drivel) to be filled with a bunch of obviously made-up names - we want it to look like a gathering of professionals. So that those of us browsing the site from work can more easily convince our bosses that we're actually doing something work-related, rather than just wasting time.

Well, we wouldn't want to intrude on your privacy. Perhaps you should hide under the desk... never know when the CIA may be out to get you. Trust me, privacy is highly over-rated.

"Privacy and the Internet" has become one of my favorite topics. I'm seriously thinking about writing a series of papers on this, maybe even towards a PhD.
First of all, Tintin, you are right. There is no way to stop you from posting as John Smith. But tell me, when you come here voluntarily, sign-up voluntarily, participate/post voluntarily, how can the invasion come from JavaRanch? Where are you given the right to anonymity? Contrary to public opinion, you are not granted any such right.
Second, Invasion implies intrusion, that JavaRanch would be coming and taking something from you. I have news for you...you have no right to your own name! While this is disturbing to many people the first time they hear it, it's true. You can't trademark your name, only your image.
There are a lot of things people assume in the name of all-mighty privacy. It generally comes as a shock, but in the US all personal property information is public record and is required by law to be available through local government offices. This means that (in the US) I have the right (guaranteed by law!) to know how much property you own, where it is, how much you paid for, even specific details of any improvements (houses and such).
The natural question that follows, of course, is what IS private? Well, things like medical information, credit history, financial status, social-security numbers, what goes on in your home/on your property, etc. Access to information of this nature requires your consent (as long as you are acting legally).
Sorry this is so long. Here is the final note:
This website is JavaRanch's property, and they have every right to request that you use your real name or make any other request in order to allow you to participate, especially since it is ultimately non-enforceable(from a logistical standpoint). You choose to participate here! The fact that you created a user ID and participate in these forums grants implied consent to abide by JavaRanch's rules.

Anyway we didn't say "use your real name" we just said don't use a name which is obviously made up. You can call yourself John Smith, Bob Jones whatever, just make it sound real and we're happy

Exactly! We aren't invading anyone's privacy since we don't force you to participate. If you don't want to use your real name then go hang out at Marcus Green's forum. But I really don't see why anyone should care... are you embarrassed to be a Java programmer?

I guess, the Netscape Warrior thought it was time for War. Chill out, Joel, I was just trying to find out the logic behind it and I did get logical replies from Jim, Cindy and Angela. Thanx guys. And I do post using my real name on all other JavaRanch Boards except this one. Just am in a playful mood when I am in this Meaningful Drivel and so have to be my Fav Cartoon character, Tintin.
Regards
Tintin
