For large systems, (online shops and the like) the typical approach is to get access to an online payment gateway from a bank and build an interface to that. ie they process the money, you tell them the amount and credit card details etc.
I don't know anything about 'Paypal' or the way it works on the web. Hopefully someone else can help.

If I want to add the payment function for a site(not that large), what I need to do? do it related to any programming tasks?

Probably not. For real-time payment and confirmation you typically need banking-type solutions.
You may need to disconnect the two actions. That is, let them order, give them the cost and an order number. Prompt them to enter those details into Paypal or some other payment service. They should quote the order number at the same time. When you can confirm payment from Paypal, you send them confirmation and send the order.
There way be ways to automate some of this with Paypal or another inline payment mechanism, but I'm not aware of them.

Ken,
Payment stuff are handled by various payment gateways, even this link wud be useful..CCNOW
some of them also give customised Shopping Carts so that you dont have to make them.
they do charge initial setup fees & some % from the total value of the order executed.
So you dont need to worry about the payment stuff.

That would likely be "PayPal" -- visit http://www.paypal.com/

This is sort of along the same lines. I know that in PHP, there's an open source implementation and architecture for this called OSCommerce. Is there such a thing in Java? With an open source option, we could look at and analyze the code.
