servlet help!

hi! i been following examples from a book, XML and Java from scratch, n im now stuck with an error when running a particular servlet.

any idea?
im running tomcat 4.1, java 1.3.1, xerces 1.4.4, xalan j 2.5.1 on my com.

It looks like you haven't got Xerces on your class path for the deployed application. Are you sure that xerces.jar has been deployed onto the Tomcat server ?

deployed? i did set the classpath for xerces.jar.

im running win xp by the way!

The latest Tomcat changes the way classes are found - it does NOT use classpath for anything. Documentation comes with the Tomcat installation. Look for Class Loader How-to.

By "latest Tomcat", do you mean Tomcat 5?

Nope - there was a change in the convention for how classes are located on going from Tomcat 3 to 4. (and possibly within 4.x versions) I don't know if there are more changes in store. Like I said there is a class loader How To document that should explain it all.

Thanks. I've never used a Tomcat earlier than 4.1.24, so the idea of using CLASSPATH at all is pretty foreign to me.
