I ran across something interesting. Can you put JAR files for you application in subfolders under the WEB-INF/lib folder? Something like:

WEB-INF
--lib
----common
-------commons-logging.jar
----bla.jar
----bla2.jar

Notice commons-loggin.jar is in a subfolder of the lib folder called common. Will that work? Does this depend on the application server?

P.S. I know I could just test, but I am currently on a PC without development tools.

Anarchist!

Seriously, if you tested it and did find that it worked in a particular container, I would not trust it.

The relevant section of the Servlet Spec, 9.5.0, says nothing about being able to place the jars in sub-folders.

Good to know and is also what I assumed. Thanks. Please note that I was not doing this nor ever considered doing this.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
