If I want to use a servlet to stream HTML from the database to the user, would it be prettier design to use the servlet to call the methods to pull it from the database and then forward the HTML text to a JSP to present it, or should I just stream the bytes directly from the servlet? It seems like it wouldn't be that advantageous in this case to go all the way to a JSP, but I'll defer to the wisdom of the ancients if they foresee any potential design issues down the road...

If the page is in final format from the DB, why go through all the overhead of a faux JSP page?
