Hi. I started a thread a while back which may help you. It has source code that I created that you may freely use.
http://www.coderanch.com/t/360651/Servlets/java/HELP-Applet-trouble-Servlet-response

-Dan

P.S. - a little background info on that thread. I originally had trouble trying to communicate using POST method using serialized objects because the response was in EXCEL format, which the applet can not handle. So it was suggested that I use GET/CGI method. Unfortunately, this method only works if your URL string isn't too long. A further drawback is if you are passing a password as a parameter, it is visible. So I decided I must find a way to communicate using POST method, which I later found out how to do myself. This basically entails creating additional servlets that perform the additional services (see my last post in that thread). I hope this helps.
