Hi Graham
URL/URLConnection class is used when you want to interact with server side components through GUI based applications[Swing].It's not used much when you want to work with browser as client. I would like to know what exactly you want to do. You can submit a XML data in the text area to the servlet using post. On server side you will recieve it as string and then u can parse it using dom or sax.

Let me know if we are on the same track

And if you are looking at uploading 'files' from the client to the servlet, I would recommend using a third party package like the O'Reilly Servlet Package by Jason Hunter which has loads of utilities for Servlets, primary being file upload from HTML client.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
