What do you mean by call from the command prompt?

A servlet has to be running within a servlet container to work.
There are tools like wget which can be used to call URLs from the command line.

One of the greatest benefits of putting your non-web flow and non-html formatting code in Java Beans is that they can be run independently from the app server. Each Java Bean can have it's own main method.
