The folks at Wrox have let us have a sneak preview of some of the up and coming book covers that they have, and they would like our opinions:

I hate the first one. It looks like an ad to get Stephan a date.
.... Stephan also like puppies, Japanese food, and long walks on the beach with a special someone.

Did anyone notice that the Java people are much better looking than the C#, VB, .Net group?

I think that I notice a theme going with some of these folks. Exactly how do you author multiple books at a time?

why do all the descriptions include java terms??
eg. Book Title: "C# Data:..."
Description in Small print: "Class Design, Threads, Event Handling, Layout Managers, Swing Components, JDBC, XML, Security, JavaHelp"
am I missing something here???
I know they say that C# is a close replica of Java but that is ridiculous! JDBC??!!

Hey, I'm back on Sesame Street!
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, ... and uh, I lost count.
Seriously, I think that this is a look at style, not specific covers. How many people on a cover is too many?
Personally, I like one person on the cover, and despite some comment about the Oracle: Expert one-on-one book, I think the cover is cool. The one quibble is that I keep wondering if Tom is bald or not.

Thomas may have a point about the blurb, it's a bit much. Oh and six is about the most you can fit on a cover without it looking strange.

OK, if we're specific covers, I don't like number two. At the very least, I'd be really scared to meet them in an alley. That can't be their best photo, can it???

On the cover of the second book it looks like the guy smiling just passed gas and is laughing about it, but the other guy doesn't know/smell it yet!

On a more serious note, I like the group photos better than the older ones where each other was in their own little frame.
I still think that more than 4 or 5 makes it look realy cluttered.

I kinda like the look of the bio on the front cover. Saves me flipping the book over or checking the last pages to find out who the author is and what he/she does ... that way I can go right to the content page
I like the new fonts and the left-hand justification.

I have a question about cover no. 8.
Are they the authors' real names?
Because (UK readers will recognise these)..
Bob Hoskins?
Ian Botham?
Clive Tyldesley (sic)?
John Thomas?
Bit of a coincidence?
And as for old Bob Hardknock, well that just sounds like a made up name (I think I attended his school...)
If they are real names, I apologise unreservedly to the individuals concerned.

The 2 guys on book #2 look friendly enough,.. it's the subject of the book that looks unfriendly.
I think the group photo idea is a good one, but it looks too fake with all the individual photos pasted in together like that. The lighting is different for each one and it throws the whole thing off.
I also noticed the markedly high (100) percentage of girls on the covers that are cutie babes. B]

LOL!
My view: the ones with few people (1-2) are too 'in your face', the last one with a cast of thousands looks like a big old mess. Definitely prefer this to the mug shots.
On a side note, are we seeing a better female representation?
Dave.

I like the top one the most, the one with Stephan Ziegler. Why ? because his resume (CV) is next to the picture.
Now I know that this impossible to do with Beginning XML 2e book But how about doing something similar inside the book for all the authors of the that book. I like seeing what these clever people look like.
I prefer the new format (a group photo) to the old format. A massive improvement.

I guess the ranchers from higher echelons would make a better pic. Why not invite WROX guys over for Tea/lunch and convince them about the idea.

I consider having your photo on the cover of a technical book the most vain and egocentric behaviour. I will continue to believe this till I get the opportunity to do it myself, when I will try to decide between these two pictures.

Marcus...
If at all you decide to press ahead with the err...umm...sort of revealing picure...what do you think would be an appropriate title for the book? (Assuming that we're dealing with a technical one here)... Java Exposed ? or A ringside view of the JVM

Hi guys,
thanks for all your comments, we are all really pleased that you have been able to see these designs. At the moment, they are all mock-ups so the text might not always match up - we can guarantee that when the books are released, the text will match And I'm certain that Bob Hoskins won't be authoring them. Oh and Simon, don't panic, your photo was used because of your stunning good looks not because you are writing on these books
For the multi-author books, we had been thinking of putting one of the authors in a red and white hoop top with a beanie hat, and then people who bought the book could win a prize if they found him or her, but we decided against it because it might infringe on copyright etc.
Do you guys think that they could be improved in any way? Which do you prefer, the new ones or the old ones? Would you still be able to tell they are Wrox books?
Thanks again!
Damian White,
Wrox Press

Hi.
Group foto is better.
Next CI-problem is name: Wrox. When I mention it in german, it sounds if I am speaking about a little known bacteria or a brain washing program of the former KGB.
But the books are really good. O.k. Heavy to transport. But really good.
