Hi,

I am not clear about the concept of a container for a servlet and an EJB and also what are the tasks performed by the container?

The container is the server application in which they reside.
Tomcat is a very popular open source servlet container.

containers are programs. like your main method program which calls various methods from your objects. like containers calls init() method of you HttpServlet, when servlet is loaded onto container. then for every request it calls your service methods.

container also reads your web.xml and instantiates ServletContext and ServletConfig object...
