Is there a way in J2EE to determine the browser type/version and operating system of the end user that hits my website?

Not really. All you can do is look at the User-Agent header and try to figure it out. The format of that header is not all that deterministic so this is always a lot of fun.

Also, be aware that this header is easily spoofed.
