Again, I don't know if this "u" person knows the answer, but I'll handle it.

web.xml is known as the "deployment descriptor". Within it you define the configuration of your web application. Within it you set up simple things like the display name of the web app, and which version of the servlet specification your web app is to use.

More complex components such as filters, listeners, and servlets can be declared along with appropriate mappings.

How JSPs are to be handled, their preludes and codas can be specified.

You can specify how exceptions and errors are to be dealt with.

And so on.
