If I save an object into the session in a clustered env, is there anything I need to do to "synchronize" that access across the diff. parts of the cluster? Or does/should every implementation of a clustered web server handle this (for example with RMI stubs/proxy or whatever)?

It is the responsibility of the servers to replicate the session across the server array.

Check out the Tomcat Clustering Docs

I'm sure choices vary among containers. WebSphere can persist the session to a database with several options for how often. We use this with 6 clones and find we can stop & restart one or two at a time with no session problems.
