The container knows the name of the file and the location of it.The the specification mentions that properly , that which is the configuration file , what is its name and where to look for it.

It won't recognize it if you spell it that way.
It's "web.xml" (all lower case).

The web.xml file is the file the Servlet container knows to look for, and it knows to look for it in the WEB-INF folder. It's just part of the responsibility of the web container to know this.

Is there a deeper meaning to your question? Are you having a problem running a war file?
