I would like to know if there is a standard technique or best practice for building urls in a servlet that is behind a proxy.

For example, a user might enter
http://servlet.under.test/test
in order to access the container as
http://some.actual.machine:8082/testing

Currently we are doing this by reading in a property that contains the proxy base url and building links by prepending this value. I would like to eliminate the properties file approach if possible.

Thanks,

We use the same approach. Somebody tells that sometimes proxies passes an actual visible address as some http parameter, so if you know your proxy server than you can get advantage of this.
