Why are non-ticketed passengers allowed to even enter the airport premises? I think only ticketed passengers and only their close relatives should be allowed to enter the airport premises. The 9/11 hijackers did not do their hijacking in an ad hoc manner. They studied the airports several times, i.e, they were loitering inside the airport several times, examining security and loopholes long before they actually hijacked.

There is no such thing as a non-ticketed passenger. Passengers cannot ride an airplane without a ticket, therefore they cannot be passengers.
If a person enters the airport and recieves a ticket, only then are they considered a passenger.
People who take PASSENGERS to the airport are no longer allowed passed the metal detectors in most of the larger airports now.

Justin,
I think you underestimate the problem. Do you realize how many airports are around the country. We are not just looking at major airports, but all of them. You have inside the airport, but you also have to realize how large the perimiter of each of these airports are. Then you have airlines arriving from foreign countries. And after that you have to worry about them once their in the sky (handheld surface to air rockets).
This is a large problem, and no one company is going to solve it.

I think it's the same in the US now, but in the UK nobody without a boarding pass (i.e. they had a ticket and checked in) is allowed "airside". That means just about anybody can roam the check-in area of the airports.
I actually work in a building just on the Perimeter of Heathrow Airport in London, it's not unknown for me to go to one of the bars/cafes in the check-in or arrivals area of one of the terminals just for lunch or something.
If we applied the rule "NOBODY WITHOUT TICKET MAY EVEN ENTER THE TERMINAL BUILDING". Then what about people who intend to buy their ticket at the airport, the sad loiterers like me who just like to watch the planes, what about people who are meeting people who are arriving?
One thing i would like to see more of (I think they had it at JFK when I visited there), is metal detectors at the entrance to the building. We don't have that here, I think they do in Ireland and some other countries.
