Grab a copy of the HFSJ and there is a very good explanation of the servlet life cycle!

I have some of my friends at work in jsp/servlets and when I ask them what is a servlet, they respond with some answers and I can clearly make out that they haven't gone through the HFSJ book and they think servlet just as an object but they fail to understand the importance of the init method which actually makes the object a servlet. I got to understand this from the HFSJ book. Thanks to the authors for making this clear!
