what is the need for web.xml
where and all it is used
Shall we run servlet and html without web.xml

It was possible to invoke servlets without explicitly declaring them in your deployment descriptor (web.xml) in older containers. Some still have this feature but have it disabled by default.
We have a special page in our FAQ explaining why this is so.
It is Tomcat specific but the principals apply equally to any spec compliant container.
