How they call Generic Servlet,HttpServlet as an Abstract class?

In the book HeadFirst Servlet & JSP, authors described the GenericServlet class & HttpServlet class as abstract class (Page 98). Can you please explain??

Whats to explain? Look at the API!

You will never have a reason to try to create an instance of either one anyway. A servlet programmer has to extend HttpServlet to accomplish anything.
