A while ago I tried to find .RA -> MP3 converter, but couldn't find anything Is such a conversion theoretically impossible or I just wasn't lucky?

Hi,
Try Streambox Ripper. Maybe a solution.

I haven't looked, but I think you're more likely to find a prog (or maybe two) that will do ra -> wav and wav -> mp3

Thanks guys...I got it. This is what I did:
Installed WinAMP and also installed a plugin that generates ouput in MP3. Then I played the .ra file after setting the default plugin to the new one. And it created the .mp3 file.
The thing is, Winamps' default output is sound (that you can hear, I mean). By changing the default output to use .mp3 plugin, it creates an mp3 file instead.

Hi, Jim
How do you do to configure that?

yes, but what about streaming audio? in some cases they have the real audio player embedded as an object on the page, is there a way to record that output to MP3's?

Preferences->options->plugins->output
In the output textarea, you'll see all the plugins that are installed. Choose mp3 one. Specify the output directory.
Make sure you've installed the pluging before starting winamp.
You can download Winamp from www.winamp.com They also have a plugin page there. I just picked one of the mp3 output plugins. I don't know which one.

Hi Jim
I tried the same but with no Result. I have the mp3 plug-in Configured and set as the Default one.If i play a mp3 file, it does create another mp3 for me (without actually playing it) but when I play the .ram file , nothing happens.
One reason could be that I am trying a .ram file and not a .ra file. Would that matter ??Whats the diff between them ??

Any clues ??

That's what I said. If you configure a diff output pluggin, it won't produce the sound. It'll produce a file! To make it make noise revert back to the original .wav plugin
Yes, i have a .ra file ie. real audio. I think .ram not same as .ra

I think Steambox Ripper can do the job. That is, convert streaming audio (such as .ra file) to Mp3.

My Dear Jim
That was not my point. I understood what u were talking abt and was not expecting any Sound. But what i WAS expecting was a mp3 file at the end of the day(sorry, end of playing the .ram file) but I got neither(nor Sound, nor mp3 file).
Any Clue ??

Well, I also said, "Yes, i have a .ra file ie. real audio. I think .ram not same as .ra"
So, again, it may be due to the fact that you are trying to open .ram file.
Try opening a .ra file and see whether it creates .mp3 or not.

I think, most of the .ram files are simple text files which has links defined to .rm files elsewhere in the web.
If you open your .ram file with notepad or any text editor, you can figure out which .rm its referring to, and you can download that .rm and then covert it in to mp3s using any popular rm2mp3 converters. Check downloads.com for popularity chart of converters.

Ashok.

My actual post says "...*most* of the .ram files are ..."
Especially the .ram's that you pull off the web.
I agree with you, and I have noticed that there are some .ram files which actually contains binary data, especially .rams holding video data. I can point you to any number of web .ram music files on the web, which are actually plain text files, which you can download and verify for yourself!

I think .ram , .ra and .rm are same formats used for video and audio, but .ra can't be used to display video, others can be.

Open your .ram file with notepad. (Right click file, to "Open With..") You'll notice .ram files are just pointers to the actual source file, which would have a .ra extention. There's no audio data stored in .ram files.
