Can someone tell me what a Portal exactly means?

Found this at www.dictionary.com:

FYI - here are some portals that I use to search the internet.
Yahoo is the most established, and has nice sub-groups but lately I have been using go.com alot
Yahoo.com
Go.com
infoseek.com (sends you to go.com)
AltaVista.com
HotBot.com

Basically Portal is a site which gives complete information on all the possbile aspects a pesrson may require. Like yahoo say for example. It gives everything at one place
You will find stocks,horoscope,searchengine,weather report ,chat , emails, greetings at just one place.
Now portal can be of two types
1) horizontal portal
2) vertical portal
vertical portal exmaple is yahoo,webveda,excite
Horizontal portal is one which just provide a vast information only in one particular aspect . say for example stocks .A horizontal portal will provide all the information about the stock but not in any other area.
