Do anybody know about some groups that are doing voluntary software development project using Microsoft technologies? I mean... programmers spend their leisure time to do projects for free. I know a Dallas Java User group is doing that.
Thanks

One way to hook up with some volunteer programmers is to approach the Computer Science department at you local college/university. Often these students are looking for a project which is needed to complete the CS degree.

I don't know about the rest of the programmers out there, but I'm either spending time with the wife and kids or at a pub watching the game( game can be any sport, the game is not really the purpose anyways ). If I was to program in my free time, I'd expect to get compensated greater than or equal to my day job(or barter with person).

It is harder to offer freeware for a project when you have to PAY Microsoft to use the underlying products. Both as a developer and an end-user.
Do the same thing in Java and it is free.
And you wonder why there is not much activity in the MicroSoft arena for open projects? MicroSoft sets a lousy example.

I do a lot of programming in my spare time. It is my hobby as well as my career. I still spend time with my wife and family; however, I take time for my own persuits. I have often tried to find interesting software projects to do for non-profit orgs or open source; however, it seems that they never want to take the time to talk to you about it... here I am a programmer with more than 4 years experience offering to do free work for them in my spare time and they don't see the value ... I really want to delve into the world of Java for math and engineering applications. I think that is a really under-targetted market.
That's my meaningless drivel for the day.

The Orange County VB Users groups have these SIGs. (Special Interest Groups)
One of them is application development, it meets every wednesday night, they work on a project for two months. The other SIGS are once a month on a particular Saturday of the month.
Like .Not on the third Saturday of the month
and VB Data Access on the first Saturday of the month
the link to their site is

........
It is harder to offer freeware for a project when you have to PAY Microsoft to use the underlying products
and I was afraid Microsoft would sue you if you used the words "Microsoft" and "voluntary" in the same sentence..........
