OK I must have something wrong in my understanding of this whole thing, it seems to me that no matter what he sees or doesn't see the result is the same:
he sees his shadow - we have six more weeks of winter.
he doesn't see his shadow - spring will be here in six weeks.
I'm no groundhog expert but they sound suspiciously the same to me - or do I have the saying wrong??...

Well maybe thats one way to attract business into a community for one day atleast. But then I suppose its a tradition. I like winter so I am okay with it.
Actually, one more piece of info, Phil is 116 years old.
Wonder if Carl has ever been there?

Are you suggesting that CARL had something to do with the amazing longevity of a groudhog?? I KNEW that he was amazing - but I had NO IDEA . . .
