how do i convert a picture drawn on a canvas object to a Jpeg or BMP format

You can do that easily with J2SE 1.4 as they provide image io classes. If you can't use the beta SDK in production, consider the following APIs:
  • Java Advancing Image API
  • JIMI API

  • Both APIs have methods to save/retreive images to/from various file formats. I found JIMI quite easy to use and it gave surprising results in terms of performance. JAI is a bit more complex as you need to understand more graphic concept before you can really do something that works
