Simon and Garfunkel...
Which American can ignore their music that was produced during the 1960s...
Their contribution to the music of the World should be covered in all textbooks in said planet but I digress...
Anyway, I'm sticking to the USA.
There's this song called A Most Peculiar Man that reminds me of myself and how I may end ...

Tony,
"He had no friends, he seldom spoke,
And no one in turn ever spoke to him"
- Couldn't be true for you??? And if you think Simon& Garfunkel is great, count me as your friend, and believe me I would never stop talking!!
I love Simon & Garfunkel. Among my favourites "Bridge over troubled waters" & "For Emily, whenever I may find her" Still try to follow Simon's works but nothing can be magical as what "Simon & Garfunkel" together can offer!!!

How To Seduce Older Women And Date Their Daughters: play the Scarborough Fair song
Tony - take heart, you are still young to have such thoughts - be cheerful - maybe you should bring back moments of your carefree youth - start or join a rock band again

"For Emily, Whenever I May Find Her"
What a flashback! Back in the late sixties when I was the leader and lead guitar of a rock band in San Juan, I started getting anonymous phone calls from one girl who would not let me know her name or who she was... She just said that she was "in love" with me but she didn't want to give away her identity. She did say that she had spoken to me in person at least once in one of the many places that we had played.
She asked me to give her a "name" by which I would call her during our phone conversations and I chose Emily for the Simon & Garfunkel song

Nanhesru:
"start or join a rock band again"
I have had to accept that that era is gone forever. I have a joke (just a joke!) that says that no one over the age of 40 should be allowed to play in a rock band
Periodic jamming is another matter... That can be accomplished (and I should get into the habit of it).
On December of 2000 some of my old friends from the music days in San Juan were playing in a sidewalk cafe here in Delray Beach (the instruments were just inside of the establishment, not on the sidewalk) and I joined them for a couple of songs, Strange Brew by The Cream (Clapton) and Born Under A Bad Sign also from the same album. I played lead guitar on both.
These songs were particularly different from the fare that they were playing ("lounge band?") but many people stopped walking and started listening as if they had been transported back to some other era when they were rebellious young rock fans in some university campus. At least that was the way a mother of two young boys told us after. She must have been in her later forties...

I have re-ripped A Most Peculiar Man to the size of 1.2 MB so it is less of a burden to download via modem (I have DSL).
Another song that I like by Simon and Garfunkel (and in the same theme of "solitude") is:
I Am A Rock:
"I Am A Rock
"I Am An Island
"And A Rock Feels No Pain
"And An Island Never Cries"

"...no one over the age of 40 should be allowed to play in a rock band "
Although that was meant as a joke, my vision of what a modern day rock band should look like while enthusiastically playing (way after the 1960s) can be seen in The Romantics video released in the 1980s for the song What I Like About You.

I remember when I turned 29 years old (in Long Island, NY) I received a post card from my father (in Puerto Rico) asking me if I remembered what I said ten years before: "Do not trust anyone over thirty" (A well known 1960s motto then).
I wrote back that I'd changed my mind then, considering that the only other respected and appropriate alternative that I had under such circumstance would be suicide!
He never brought the subject up again! Ha ha!

"Don't talk of love,
But I've heard the words before;
It's sleeping in my memory.
I won't disturb the slumber of feelings that have died.
If I never loved I never would have cried
I am a rock.........
Yet another favourite of mine is
El Condor Pasa
I'd rather be a sparrow than a snail.
Yes I would
If I could
I surely would.
I'd rather be a hammer than a nail
Yes I would
If I could,
I surely would

To continue,
Feeling old??? Listen to what Paul Simon has to say about getting old....
http://www.paulsimon.com/lyrics/old.html
The human race has walked the earth for 2.7 million
And we estimate the universe at 13-14 billion
When all these numbers tumble into your imagination
Consider that the Lord was there before creation
God is old
Were not old
God is old
He made the mold

Later,
Hema

hey tony... sorry i missed this post 4 weeks ago. it's been a long time.
"In the clearing stands a boxer
and a fighter by his trade,
and he carries the reminders
of every glove that laid him down or cut him
'til he cried out in his anger and his shame;
I am leaving, I am leaving,
but the fighter still remains..."

And now that I have come to doubt,
All that I once held as true,
I stand alone without beliefs,
The only truth I know is you.
And as I watch this drop of rain
Weave it's weary path and die,
I know that I am like the rain,
There but for the grace of YOU, go I.

And from this same song - proof positive that even great poets have self doubts:

The song that I was writing is left undone,
I don't know why I waste my time,
writing songs I can't believe,
With words that tear and strain to rhyme.
