If they cannot transcend their animal instincts, the Pope should change the rules to let them marry and dissipate their pentup urges. Agree?

Yeah, except that no marriage rule has little or nothing to do with this. These people are deviated individuals/pedophiles. Forget about changing the rules and put them in the jail, where they belong.

Yeah, but this deviant behaviour arises from repression. If they led a normal life, got married, and had children of their own, this wouldn't have happened, right?

I doubt men have sex with boys because they're not allowed to marry; the usual outlet for 'pent-up' frustration for a woman-loving man is an affair, not a 14-year old boy. And plenty of Catholic priests get caught up in affairs with women; it's just easier for the Church to keep them quiet if/when they're found out.
The far bigger problem is the Church's tireless insistence on keeping everyone else out of "their business,"including the very parishioners they presume to serve. A pedophile can see opportunity in that, not to mention a role of trust and authority, and unsupervised access to the boys -- well, there it is.
Stuff still goes on in other denominations, but in many of those instances ministers are expected to marry, and are usually far more accountable to the elders or presbytery or what-have-you in their churches than to the Holy See.
It's pretty disgusting; the Church is so busy on the one hand issuing moral doctrine, and often so blind to its own disease on the other, it's difficult what to make of the institution any more.

>the usual outlet
Perhaps the desperate deviant mind seeks the easiest available outlet - women could be harder to find - and there would be greater inner resistance in them too - hey it's a holy priest, and they don't want to be in trouble and get accused of 'seducing' him.
But I still think if these louts had children of their own - these outrageous misdeeds wouldn't have happened.

oh so married fathers don't commit child abuse??? Wow! you learn something new every day!!!
The fact is that despite what people think RC Priests are still human and they are susceptable to the same neuroses and anti-social disorders that non-priests are capable of.
People are disgusted because these men have been put in a position of trust.
I now consider myself an agnostic but was raised as a Roman Catholic, went to Catholic schools and spent a lot of time around priests. Now thankfully the priests I knew did not (to my knowledge) abuse their position of trust, many of them were quite young and did actually believe that Priests should be bale to marry but were willing to obey the rules because they believed they were "called" to their vocation.
Priests are in same grouping as teachers, doctors and other professions where there is an element of trust involved. Of course abuse goes on in all of these positions as well. It has nothing at all to do with sexual repression, it has to do with mental illness.

I have a problem with celibite priests for other reasons, but I don't think that celibicy is the reason for the deviant priestly behavior.
First, my other problem with celibite priests. I oppose the institutionalization ( is that a word? ) of celibicy as the highest form of devotion to God. What if the whole world finally decided to dedicate themselves to God? The world would be devoid of human life within 100 years. That is obviously not what God intended. None of God's other doctrines would lead to the end of human civilization if everyone followed them, q.e.d. celibicy is not the proper course for anyone that has the chance to marry.
Second, good call, Angela. Even if I had to go for a strech on bread and water, I would not be attracted to boys. It is my suspicion, and it is unfounded in every way, but it is my suspicion nonetheless, that many priests enter the clergy because they know that they are homosexual and they think that they can better repress their temptation to act on their desires if they are priests. To them I say, kudos. To those who fall short and grope the altarboy I say, repent.

I guess I've been naive - I was just trying to find a rational explanation for such senseless aberrant behavior.
Celibacy can be a good thing - in moderation The goal is to cultivate nonchalance towards sense pleasures - and when the mind has no cravings, and no attachments, it can be free - to perform one's duties efficiently, and to serve humanity. But this does not mean repression - a dam with no outlets is bound to overflow or break down - therefore moderation is the way to go.
A beautiful simile given is that our minds should be like a lotus flower - even though it grows in marshy slushy ponds, it rises above all that, and blooms brilliantly, untainted by the surroundings.

Better to marry than to burn, eh?
I totally agree with Angela on this one. It has nothing at all to do with sexual repression, it has to do with mental illness. (Although I suppose it's an utterly meaningless coincidence that I too had a catholic upbringing only to become an agnostic.)

I don't think celibacy is an imminent danger to humanity.
Finally, in defense of sacerdotal celibacy, if I remember my history correctly, it was more of a product of historical tradition rather than a scriptural imperative. It was later on that the early Church fathers, notably Augustine, Origen, etc. levelled their heavy theological ballast against married priests.
The point is, a priest is supposed to abide by standards above lay people. The core idea of being a priest (a Catholic one, anyway) is self-renunciation. Sexual moderation may be well and good for lay people, but that is not supposed to be a pleasure (refuge? luxury?) of one who is supposed to have voluntarily given up all claims on what we would consider earthly happiness (family, goods, a career, fame, the brass ring, etc.).

Let us not forget that no one is holding a gun to a priest's head and stopping them from getting married. Any priest can leave the priesthood at any time if they feel that a celibate life is not for them.
As far as the pedophilia issue goes with the Catholic priests, other clergy in other religions also have problems with pedophilia. A group of pedophiles that were recently arrested by the FBI included 6 members of the clergy. 2 were Catholic priests. The religion of the other 4 was not reported in the news.

Women are very easy to find. They are everywhere. Take a look around you. Aren't at least half the people you see every day women? And why would a non-Catholic woman be worried about seducing a Catholic priest?
And most cases of pedophilia are committed by a parent.

I believe you, but I am disturbed by the notion. Some folks live their lives as though they only have to answer to themselves. My religious beliefs make me say, "Aren't they going to be surprised later!"

There's a shocker. It's only news if it's Catholics it seems.

Hell why would a Catholic woman be worried either ... I have been very attracted to more than one Priest in my lifetime ... they've always been so bloody devoted to their Orders though ... dammit!

I'm not a Christian but I like the part about a priest being able to leave his priesthood if he doesn't like the life. Why be a priest and commit such acts when he can be free and do whatever he wants to.

I dont now about you, but where I live you're not allowed to molest little kids (or anyone else for that matter) regardless of whether you're a priest or not.

It's not really the not allowing that's the problem, of course, it's the
keeping quiet that's the problem.
And check out this dirtbag while you're at it.

True in general - but priests interact with children far more than they get to hang around with women.
So this problem seems more to be a case of conscious dementia, rather than directly resulting from attempted celibacy...
