As much as I like a good debate, rumor has it that there are some heavy, heated discussions going on in this forum. I don't even want to look.
JavaRanch is "a friendly place for Java greenhorns". And although this forum is for talking about everything else, I still want it to be friendly.
Also note that this particular forum is "Meaningless Drivel". Not "Meaningful Debate".
I really think that the heavy debate stuff should probably be taken to somewhere else on the internet.
I think that discussion here should range from rambling nonsense to thoughtful discussion. No debate. No flame wars. No slapping each other about.
We now have a whole mess of sheriffs and one moderator who have my permission to delete stuff here willy nilly, based on nothing more than what they thing is not "friendly, meaningless drivel".
Have another day!

What, they will be deleting their own posts?

The upside of getting to be bartender/sheriff is the massive power that you are permitted to abuse.
I suspect that they will either delete a message or two in a thread, or delete the whole thread. And when deleting the whole thread, they will delete their own posts.

Think of this as getting practice. Not only in clicking on the "delete" thing. but fielding the e-mails that say "You're a wicked censor! I hate you! I'm going to spam the internet telling people what a horrible site this is .... bla bla bla! Bla bla! Bla bla bla bla bla!"
In other words, be prepared to practice hitting delete in your e-mail too.

Half the fun and interest of coming here is to debate with other intelligent, logical human beings. This is one of the few places on the internet where educated smart people gather.
Contrary to the title of this thread, I think a new forum should be opened purely for debate of this type. I think as the debates get more interesting and more people start coming, you can even start charging a small fee.
Javaranch might be the next epinions.com.
This site will be the watering hole for logical beings all over the world and will simultaneously serve to expand the adoption of java and as a place for logical-minded people to discuss and debate.
What fun!

I don't think we want JavaRanch to be the next epinions.com.

The trouble is that some people get very angry. And then other people start to develop an ulcer. And those people try to share their ulcer with me.
I think that if a discussion is started about a serious topic and you took great care as to not get anybody riled up, chances are that the responses to that thread would be in line with your post. Rather than a debate, it's a discussion. As long as all of the participants were keeping things smooth, I doubt anybody would delete it. But if somebody decides to be a jerk, it could be yanked.
I like the fact that we have hardly and rules. I like to keep things here simple.
These forums are for Java discussion first. This forum is a place to talk about "other stuff". I want this to be a place to enjoy some non-engineering time. I don't want this to be a place I dread coming to.
Whatever happened to that thread about sex in the workplace?

Errr... it was part of the mass deletions a year or so ago, to free up some disk space when we were in a bind. Likewise the mighty Tick thread.

I am happy that some one did this (deleted the post which from the very begining should have been ignored.)
But when some "moron" comes and tell them this thing, they won't do it. When moron tells them statistics then people are more intrested to know who the hell is this moron rather than listen to what he wants to say. (again long and confusing)
AW All the best for good move in right direction.
I know how to open a jar thanks to Dirk Schreckmann
