I don't know, somehow I can't seem to make ends meet anymore in my country. No more integrated circuits microelectronics design, foreigners keep coming in. Guess this must be the trend, you come into my country, I go to other country. Money makes the world go around.(???) But nope, don't think I can qualify for even H1B visa because of my schzo-depression. But I thought that so long it ain't immigration visa, it should be OK? Pls help.

In my country, GDP growth for the 2nd quarter is forecated at about 1% but employment figure will need a longer time to pick up.
First, my project can't work, Susan has left me, May will be leaving soon and I'll have no one left other than my family.

I got this in my E-mail (was addressed to mapraputa@javaranch.com )
-------------------------------------------------
From : Marvin Douglas
Abidjan Ivory coast
TEl: +225-0590 2958
APPEAL FOR URGENT BUSINESS ASSISTANCE.
Dear,
Please Permit me to inform you of my desire of going
into business relationship with you. I got your name
and contact from the Ivoirian chamber of commerce and
industry. I prayed over it and selected your name
among
other names due to its esteeming nature and there
commendations given to me as a reputable and trust
person that I can do business with and by the
recommendation , I must not hesitate to confide in you
for this simple and sincere business.
I am Marvin Douglas the only son of late Mr. Thomas
Douglas. My father was a very wealthy cocoa merchant
in
Abidjan the economic capital of Ivory coast, my father
was poisoned to dearth by his business associates on
one of their outings on a business trip .
My mother died when I was a baby and since then my
father took me so special. Before the death of my
father on december 2001 in a private hospital here in
Abidjan he secretly called me on his bed side and
told me that he has the sum of seven million, five
hundred thousand United State Dollars. US($7.5m)
left in fixed /suspense account in one of the prime
bank here in Abidjan ,that he used my name as his
only son for the next of Kin in depositing of the
fund. He also explained to me that it was because of
this wealth that he was poisoned by his business
associates. That I should seek for a foreign partner
in a country of my choice where i will transfer this
money and use it for investment purpose such as real
estate management or hotel management .
Sir, I am honourably seeking your assistance in the
following ways:
(1) To provide a bankaccount into which this money
would be transferred to .
(2) To serve as a guardian of this fund since I am
only 22years.
(3) To make arrangement for me to come over to your
country to further my education and to secure a
resident permit in your country.
Moreover, sir i am willing to offer you 15% of the
total sum as compensation for your effort/input after
the successful transfer of this fundinto
your nominated account overseas.
Furthermore, you indicate your options towards
assisting me as I believe that this transaction would
be concluded within seven (7) days you signify
interest to assist me.
Anticipating to hear from you today.
Thanks and God bless.
Best regards,
Marvin Douglas

Mapraputa,
That's a very real scam often perpetrated by groups operating out of the Ivory Coast (La Cte d'Ivoire).
I think the modus operandi includes the victim opening an account an giving them *evil doers* access to it. At which point, any money they've convinced the victim to put there, they take, and probably keep withdrawing (against any "overdraft" protections) until the bank says "no more". They've probably figured out some other dastardly things to use such an account for also - all of which include the victim losing money and/or gaining debt responsibilities.
Hmm, isn't the JavaRanch trying to drum up some funding...

The ploy is usually done through Nigeria. The US government reports this as being one of the more successful scams on the internet with average losses reported in the area of US$5,000. It works on the prinicipal of taking advantage of people's greed. Ususally they tell you that they need a little money (just a few thousand dollars) to bribe a government official or two. There is always just one tiny little thing in the way of getting all those millions that a few more dollars will clear away!
Just remember, there's no such thing as a free lunch.

But before I become a firefighter, I'm thinking of going down to lower Manhattan (Cortlandt Station, am I right?) to look at the former site of the WTC. So many people buried alive down there, including firefighters........BY the way, is the chinatown somewhere around there as well?

I think the Cortland St. station is still closed. Chinatown is just north of City Hall. It's about a 15 minute walk from the World Trade Center area.

Hey! Thanks. So am I right to say if I wanna visit World Trade Center site, I alight at City Hall station. If I wanna visit Chinatown, I drop at Brooklyn Bridge City Hall station. By the way, is the statue of Liberty located at Liberty Harbour? Am I to drop at Wall St station and take a ferry to Liberty Harbour? By the way, where is the Empire State Building?

Look, Map, don't spend your time reading this kind of mail. Instead try to spend time emailing me instead. This is much better than earning how to grow hydroponics vegetable on the ceiling.....

Nope, they haven't. There's still my elder brother. My parents always think I'm a stoooopid boy who can't even wash his own underwear, who don't have social skills, management skills......Pity the long time employee, since he knows how to operate every machines, he should jolly well be sitting among the board of directors if the factory has one.......but he's still working as a employee, but he always like to buy lottery, let's hope one day he will strike it rich!
