How can you play audio (mp3) or video in a Java application? Is there an API or something for this?

Yes you can do both of these things with the Java Media Framework (JMF). Sun has a reference implementation of it on the Java web site... just search for JMF. It works very well and is fairly easy to use.
Hope this helps.
