A father and son are in a car. They really are father and sun, biologically, no questions they have that relationship, this is not in dispute.
They are in an accident and the father is killed, dead, stone dead, he is no longer alive. This is not in dispute or the point of the story.
The son is rushed to hospital, taken into the operating theatre. The surgeon looks down at the boy and says "I cannot operate, because this is my son". How come?

That is the answer I was looking for Matthew, but how many other people (like me) didn't come to that answer. I have got into conversations with people where I had to say, "two people in the world can call you their son", who are they?, and the other person would say, "that's not true, only my father can call me his son".
Of course if the story said "The nurse looked down and said this is my son", it would be no puzzle at all.
