Is it possible to center the text which is being displayed in a

JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(this, "this text to be centered!");

how does one do this?

As to your question, see what happens if you pass a JPanel containing a centered JLabel showing your text, instead of passing a string.

JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,jPanel);
