Hello
My first posting in the Big Moose Saloon.
I am studying for the J2SE Programmer certification.
The course material I have uses text files for the examples relating to file I/O. I have studied the text based material and I have a pretty good grasp of it. I have made a few little applications that mimic standard text manipulation activities.
What I would like is some general pointers on files that are not text files.
I am not expecting anyone to give me code or one-to-one tuition - that would be rude and I am far too polite for that. I would be grateful if someone could point me in the right direction (weblinks, tutorials, articles, etc) so I can learn for myself.
For example - a simple vector graphics application.
The 2D objects that the user uses to make their drawing - how are these saved to file?
How do they all re-appear when the file is opened?
How are their relative positions to the 'drawing area' saved?
Does the programmer have to code a way for the program to store all the 2D objects and their 'properties' and then write all this information to file on saving?
Any guidance as to how I can start to learn about non-text files would be gratefully received.
Darren

Hi Darren, Welcome to Javaranch.
Just an fyi, if you are preparing for the Sun Certified Java Programmer (SCJP) Certification, the new exam does not cover topics on file i/o or graphics applications. If your study material contains these topics, it may probably be outdated already. In case you want info on good books for SCJP, i recommend "Sun Certified Programmer and Developer for Java 2" by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates or "A Programmer's Guide to Java Certfication" by Khalid Mughal and Ralf Rasmussen.

thanks for the pointers on the books - i have noticed these titles appearing all over the forums - i will definitely be buying them soon
i should clarify the file i/o thing - the course i am using covers the essentials for the cert and has extra topics that don't relate to the course but do relate to creating real world apps with J2SE - the text file i/o material was just such an extra
hope that clarifies my interest in non-exam topics
