System and Runtime classes

Hi all
I want to know what is the difference between System and Runtime class.
When each is used ?
Also the difference between System.gc() and Runtime.gc() ?

System.gc() and Runtime.gc() both <b>suggest</b> to run the garbage collector. This request may or may not be honoured.
Attempting to override the very complex algorithms that are performed by the runtime garbage collector is generally, A Bad Idea (albeit being common - so is jumping off a bridge).
The difference between the two classes is simply functionality (by the look of it) - java.lang.Runtime is a singleton, java.lang.System provides only static methods.
