um... Just the naming conversion.

Maybe US architects feel that Tiger is more suitable.

Left to me I would have prefered Eagle, after all an Eagle will fly over the Tiger any time any where.

MS names there new projects based on mountains, resorts, lakes, etc in the area where the MS headquarters resides. I think Longhorn is a ski resort but I haven't been able to find the info online yet. I'll keep looking.

Longhorn is based on 'Texas Longhorn', u remember MS chicago(win 95)

As for "why is it Tiger, why not Lion?" - dunno. Why are you named "Kishore" and not "Anand", "Srinivas", or "Bob"? If this sort of question really interests you, I'm sure you can have hours of entertainment trying to figure out what something like "Mozilla" refers to. Really, I don't think there's much significance to these names. At best there may be an amusing story; more likely, there's none.

I am not sure, but if there are no Tigers in US, while there are Lions, they may feel that called Java 5 as Tiger is more valuable.

Anyway, it is just a *nickname* for Java 5, and there maybe totally no reason at all.

Um... Sun seems to develop J2SE 5.1 in China, as all I.T. developement in U.S. is gradually moving to China(so should I?)...

Eagles may soar but lizards don't get sucked into jet intakes

It's just a name. The real question is why they didn't keep that name in-house like they did with the previous ones (at least until after release).

Previous names were not secret prior to release. There were articles about Merlin at least half a year before the beta was out. I'm pretty sure Kestrel was also known of beforehand. I'm not sure about the others. I think Tiger is better known than these, simply because Tiger has more changes than any of the others, so it gets more discussion. Also perhaps there's the fact that Sun marketing decided to confuse everyone with their 1.5/5.0 BS, so many of us still refer to Tiger to avoid the issue.

Nope.

Longhorn is the name of a mountain in the Washington state, USA, where some of Microsoft�s engineers go skiing.

Bang goes Warren's theory - J2SE 6.0 is nicknamed Mustang (7 letters). Thought we were on to something there...but I guess it gets back on track with Dolphin. Perhaps not a very scalable naming convention however...

Apparently Dragon (5.1) is short for dragonfly as all minor (bug-fix) releases are named after insects (bugs - geddit?!). I read that on Sun's site the other day...pretty sure it was after following a link in a thread on The Ranch.

I like the nicknames; it makes the release sound a lot more exciting than some ETLA plus a number. Maybe I'm just a geek.
