make something persistent simply means store data (most of the time) in a database

Persistence refers to an object being saved in some external state so that it doesn't vanish when the program is finished.

See this reference from Bruce Eckel...

http://codeguru.earthweb.com/java/tij/tij0027.shtml

Also see the API for Serializable...

http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/io/Serializable.html

(And note that the modifier "transient" prevents variables from being stored to an object's persistent state.)

prasath,

You may want to check the following thread as well...

http://www.coderanch.com/t/397201/java/java/state-persistance

It contains links to the Java Tutorial for some "how to" information.
