Formating a Date not using SimpleDateFormat

Is there an easy way to format a Date object without having to
cast to a String?

Ummm, usually when we say "format" in Java, we mean, make a nice string representation of some data. Using this definition, it's pretty much impossible to format something without making a String. You can write chars to a Writer instead I suppose - but the idea is pretty similar. So - what do you mean when you say "format"?
