If you're not in the public eye, what's the point... Programmers (developers, etc.) usually don't see the client (at least around here, anyway) and I don't see the point in putting a noose around the neck just to be Corporate P.C... :roll:

I don't understand the fuss about wearing casual. I wore a tie through the whole boom. And the article is right: if you come to work looking ready, people think you are ready. Some people think you're too ready, but I guess those are the same ones who really hate ties in the first place.

That statement doesn't mean, when you dress nicely you must be smart. Being more/less intelligent and being able to think better/worse don't mean the same thing. I think all people have a harder time "thinking" at some point. That doesn't make them any less smart.
But I agree that your appearence can make a difference with how you work. And that can go both ways. Some people will choke in a tie. However, I perform better in my job when I am crisp, neat, clean, and dressed appropriatly.

Right now where I work we have a casual dress policy, meaning you dont have to wear a tie, no jeans, t-shirts or tennis shoes, but ties aren't required. For some odd reason I still wear a tie everyday, maybe because I'm a contractor
I've not had the chance to work anywhere where I could wear anything I wanted to but I'd really like the chance to find out how I think every day wearing shorts, a t-shirt and sandles.
