I had this domain called technofundo.com, it expired some time back. I had wanted to renew it and was looking for some affordable/reliable host for this. But today I discovered that a "commercial" site has registered my domain since it was available.

This is the notice that this site has abt the domains obtained (looks like it is their main business)

It is our policy to release any domain name that, in our opinion, another person or company has a legitimate claim to. The cost for release of the domain consists of:

(1) Reimbursement of the domain registration fee(s) and related costs plus…
(2) Costs thus far incurred related to domain set-up and server hosting

Release of a domain will be approved PROVIDED you can supply a federally registered trademark for the domain. We will not risk releasing a domain to someone who does not have a legitimate claim to a name.

None of the domains are for sale. We have acquired these domains utilizing proprietary algorithms developed specifically for our business needs. We have many domains which prevents us from commenting on the specifics for any single domain.

Many of the pages from my site are lsited/linked from various sites, but it looks like I'l have to forget all abt them. I don't have that sort of money to pay them in USD. Is there sth else that I can do to get my domain back???

You must have left it expired for a long time. I've often found it impossible to even renew my own domains with another registrar within many months of them expiring.

Ive got a domain that expires in March of 2003... will the domain registrar send me a reminder to renew my registration?
Cheers,

The registrar usually puts domain on hold for X number of days depending upon the policy of the regitrar, so that you can renew it from the same registrar in that period. The period varies from registrar to registrar. In my case it was abt 40 days. I was not happy with my hosting service provider because in one month the server was down for abt 20-22 days and they did not even reply to my enquiry mails. So I wanted to change my registrar and made sure that the hold period got over. Since then I have been loooking for someone who'll offer affordable and reliable service.
I was quite busy recently, so couldn't give more attention to it. It took abt 3 months. (long period!) Now that I have lost my domain, I realize that I should have at least "parked" my domain.

Manish, Just a naive idea . Try Registering a Company in the same name as the website and as yoursef as the Owner of the company. I dont think u need to have any employees or anything.
Once you have done that, then you can go to court saying those guys are cyber-squatting and u have a valid purpose for that Domain name, specially since u were using that name for so long (Hopefully, your site had content which had something to do with technology and not porn or something similar ; ) )

Hmmm,
Actually proving that domain really elongs to me wouldn't be that difficult. The point here is after I prove this, I'll have to pay those guys the domain registration charges and hosting charges. In fact, that's what they want.
If someone just "coincidently" thinks of the same domain name, and registers it; I have no problems with it. I would sportingly say -"Hey buddy, nice name". But these guys are simply using some algorithm to acquire expired domain names which are not renewed, though they don't have anything to do with them. It looks like it is their main business to aquire such domains with only intention of making money from ppl who owned them earlier. I hope this could be stopped somehow...
As foe me, I paid my naiveness!!!

p.s. The site indeed had some sensible contents, you may want to have a look at it mirrored here.

Well, no dramatic story to share. Just like my domain registration expires, so does others! To start with, it was a greedy & cheap trick to make some money.

Their unfair motives didn't have fire to last after 3 years, my passion still is alive to create my own niche. I won -- though the wait has been long and annoying! But as they say, all is well that ends well!

Ah, it's just another classic tale:

Boy meets domain.
Boy wins domain.
Boy and domain are briefly happy.
Boy is inattentive to domain's needs.
Boy loses domain.
Domain finds a new owner with better job and shiny new car.
Boy tries unsuccessfully to win back domain.
Boy loses job and starts drinking heavily.
Months of suffering.
Domain discovers new owner is secretly running web sites on other domains.
Boy wins back domain.
Boy is master of his domain.

Nah, my story is slightly different, difference is bold --

Boy meets domain.
Boy wins domain.
Boy and domain are briefly happy.
Boy is too busy sorting out his life problems, and likes.
Boy loses domain.
Domain finds a new owner with better job and shiny new car.
Boy tries unsuccessfully to win back domain.
Boy is keeping an eye on his domain, he knows his love is true and will last test of time.
Boy knows the new owner of domain has less than noble intentions and will dump domain soon.
Boy waits patiently.....rembering his domain and happy time they spent together....years of waiting!!!

Domain discovers new owner is secretly running web sites on other domains.
As boy had anticipated, the new owner dumped the domain, boy promises long life relationship to domain and commits.
Boy wins back domain.
Boy is master of his domain.
They live happily everafter...AMEN!!!
