Some 80 years ago, there was only NY Times. So if you can control NY Times, then you can control all the people.
Then 50 years ago, there were ABC, NBC, and CBS. Again, if you can control the big three, and later, CNN, you will also control all the people.
But not any more, now comes the internet. How can you control the internet? Everyone can learn the truth in the first hour. This is the true freedom.
You can fool some people for some time, but you can't fool all the people all the time.

Only the NY Times? What about the NY Post founded in 1803? And the NY Herald and the NY Observer and the NY Daily News and about 20 other newspapers in NYC? Don't those count?

And who's to say who is really telling the truth? The internet has probably 10 times the amount of untruth as it does truth. And as far as newspapers go, it's usually the truth as told by some bias journalist.
Nobody really knows, it's just what they were told.

And in many other countries there is only one newspaper and it is controlled by the goverment. And one TV station controlled by the government.

And in some countries you will have to obtain special permission from government to buy a new TV or even a new pair of shoes.
Citizens are not allowed to buy more than two pairs a year - one pair for winter and one for summer!

However many people seem to lack the ability or desire to discern fact from fiction, and instead only choose to believe the "truth" that best fits their preconceived notions.

You can fool some people for some time, but you can't fool all the people all the time.

And you can also show the "truth" to people so that it is as plain as day, and they will still refuse to accept it.
May I ask though what the point is?
