It is Columbus Day in America so some people have the day off (government workers mostly). Columbus Day is a celebration of the many great achievments of Italians and Italian-Americans.
So, Happy Columbus Day to our Italian friends!

Yeah, found out it was Columbus Day when I stopped by the bank at lunchtime. (Who thinks these things up?)

Happy Thanksgiving to our Canadian pals!

Note that we are celebrating the fact that Columbus finally discovered how to sail west to get to India
I am not sure if our American Indian citizens are celebrating this or not .
I think perhaps our India Indian friends SHOULD be celebrating this .

Why do Italians celebrate Columbus Day? Columbus found so little support in Italy he had to go to Spain for funding...

Also please note that this non-desired non-discovery was funded by Spain.
All future complaints about America can be forwarded to the Spanish Government in Madrid as accessories before the fact.
(Corrected - Portugal had more sense than this .

On a separate note, isn't it depressing that the Eratosthenes could have told you the diameter of the Earth more than 1500 years earlier?

Since my days as a physics major in college, I remain fascinated by how Eratosthenes estimated the circumference of the earth (and the distance to the moon and the sun).
He was also the head librarian of the Alexandria library.
I think I am his reincarnation (Ha ha!)
