McNealy explained why the No. 1 goal of Sun Microsystems right now is "reducing complexity" in the workplace. That was, so far as Sun was concerned, he said, the most significant challenge of the next ten years. "We're getting drilled for spending billions of dollars on R&D. Our attitude is: how can you not invest in R&D?"
How can you not invest in R&D??? These darn engineers and programmers earn to darn much money... Let's hire more them farmer boys... Look, Javaranch is doing quite well

Sun launches software lab in Bangalore
REUTERS [ WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 20, 2002 02:00:42 AM ]

BANGALORE: Sun Microsystems Inc announced on Tuesday the launch of a developer lab in Bangalore to promote its software tools and platform in the nation's fast-growing software services industry.

Set up with an investment of Rs 20 million ($414,000), the laboratory will provide technical consultancy, hardware and software tools for independent software vendors to test their applications built on Sun's Open Network Environment (ONE) platform, company officials told a news conference.

"The idea is to reduce time for development for software firms," said Bhaskar Pramanik, managing director of Sun Microsystems India Pvt Ltd, adding that these companies will also have access to Sun's technical workforce.

Bangalore is home to more than 1,000 software companies.

Sun and Microsoft Corp are pushing rival standards-called .NET and Sun ONE, respectively-in their battle to dominate the emerging Web services market, which enables companies to share information with customers, partners and suppliers, across disparate applications and networks.

The courting is particularly competitive in India, which has emerged as a leading global software services hub, powered by hundreds of thousands of low-cost programmers.

Sun said the Indian unit of Oracle Corp, the world's second-biggest software maker, will be its technology partner and provide key development tools and software for the laboratory.

Sun aims to support about 50 independent software vendors through the laboratory in one year.
