Reading files have .xls extension  RSS feed

Hi All

I wanted to know if one can read file that have .xls extension and do some manipulations(like reading it through VB and writing a macro) or for that matter file with extension other then .txt. I would be thankful if someone could some my query

Basically, you can read any file type in as a binary stream. The trick is in making some sense of the format. For example, if you read in an xls file, you would need to know how xls files are structured before you could do anything with the data.

The extension .xls is for Microsoft Excel spreadsheets.
You can use the Apache Jakarta POI library to read Excel spreadsheets from Java.
 
It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
