I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the sake of my country.... Corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed. -Abraham Lincoln, November 21, 1864
I should have known! I can't argue with Barbara and David P. Mikkelson, and even Macmillan accepted that it was an editorial mistake to put that quote in The Lincoln Encyclopedia (New York: Macmillan, 1950) and sent them a thank you letter. [ November 24, 2002: Message edited by: ersin eser ]
the truth of it is not relevant. in 11/64 Lincoln was on the verge of winning a war and he knew it. a war that ecliplised all the 20th century wars the states was involved in, i think of it as 'THE' war. the 'history' of that era (on both sides) contains a large number of exagerations and outright lies.
