Hi,
When I go to Sun's site to get the latest version of Java, this is what is at the top of the page:

J2SE 5.0
Download Java 2 Platform Standard Edition 5.0

Could they do anything to make version releases more confusing?
Java 1.5 is also Java 2. It also happens to be standard edition 5.

I also remember my confusion as a Java newbie - JRE, J2RE, JSDK, JDK, J2EE etc. etc. I know Sun aren't the only ones guilty of promoting this acronym hell, but they are among the worst. How about "Player" for JRE and "Builder" for JDK? Or other meaningful names? If there is one thing that winds me up in computing it is elitist jargon which excludes users and makes life difficult for learners. Meaningful names can also be concise and precise names. For the average user who just wants the "java plugin", it is neither useful nor desirable to know what a "runtime environment" is. (Yes I know there is also a download page for "the public".)

Hmmm. It's a rhetorical post. I already know about the rebuttals. Post them if you feel like it though.

I believe Sun is looking to improve on this going forward. I just saw an article in SD Times where they talk about Java Enterprise Edition 5, not "Java 2 Enterprise Edition 5." I think they're also looking to do this with J2SE, i.e. remove the "2".

Yes, more on Sun's modified naming can be found here. Of course, the very idea of changing names like this also creates some additional confusion while it's happening. Maybe Sun will manage to stick to these new names for a few years before they feel compelled to switch things around again. I don't know if they'll also continue the dual numbering scheme of 1.5 == 5.0, 1.6 == 6.0, 1.7 == 7.0. Hopefully not.
