In my requirement I need to select a word document template and update it according to user input

I was looking for a word proccesing api

jakarta poi was not so impressive http://jakarta.apache.org/poi/

Then I got this article from javaworld http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-07-2004/jw-0712-officeml.html#resources

I think using WordProcessingML is a good solution , am i correct?
has any one any experience?

is there any other open source java API with which Word document can be processed?

The problem with POI's Word support is that the version that works (better) is only available from the Subversion repository. Oh yea, and Microsoft doesn't play well with others.
I've had good luck with OpenOffice. The API is non-trivial but from what I've seen, very capable.
